| Why Ron Paul/Libertarians will never succeed in my lifetime. |

I was pontificating the other day while on the toilet with nothing to read (as I often do). I was thinking "What's wrong with this country? Why on earth aren't people voting for their freedoms? Why do they want to either vote for Theocratic assholes who want to take our freedom in the name of the "war on [enter noun here- drugs, terrorism, etc]" or stinky hippies who want us to be communists and let the government raise us cradle-to-grave?
Then it hit me. I sincerely believe, deep down, most Americans don't want freedom. The idea of making a choice and living with the consequences (either consciously or subconsciously) terrifies them. Or the idea of others living how they want to live (if it's against their beliefs) terrifies them. Or a little of both.
Freedom. Real Freedom means that we'd be on our own. We couldn't rely on the government to care for us. We couldn't rely on the government to protect us. We'd have to do it all ourselves.
The idea is scary, I agree. But it's better than the alternative. |
